Workday at Lochiel – by Cindy Matus-Morris

Sept. 11, 2026: The Patagonia Museum had a workday at the Lochiel (La Noria) Schoolhouse. My sister, Emma Matus-Voss and I drove out through the San Rafael Valley.

The Lochiel school is located several yards from the US/Mexico border. Our work included thoroughly cleaning the inside of the schoolhouse, electrical work, replacing and installing a new sign created by Mrs. Kate Musick’s class from Patagonia Elementary School many years ago, trimming mesquite limbs and general maintenance.

Lunch was enjoyed and we shared our bounty with the protectors of the old Alamo tree.

The day was nice, cool at times and we enjoyed much rain on our way home through Duquesne, Washington Camp and going by the mining operation, South 32, an Australia Corp. in Harshaw.

Nice to get home safe and sound and grateful to do something productive for our community on this day, 9/11.
