An audience of about 60 people, including U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, attended the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial at Doc Mock Park in Patagonia on July 4.
The installation of the Blue Star monument and dedication ceremony was organized and moderated by veteran and Patagonia resident Murphy Musick. The memorial is sponsored by the National Garden Club, the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs and the Town of Patagonia.
Carol Parrot of the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs explained that the concept of the memorial is to “serve as a beacon of gratitude and remembrance, providing an enduring symbol that connects our community to the sacrifices and service of military personnel.” Town council member Steve Finch formally accepted the monument on behalf of the town, and vice mayor Michael Stabile assisted with its unveiling. Alan Newman added to the solemnity of the event with the playing of taps on his bugle.
Carolyn Shafer of Patagonia provided the invocation and benediction at the start and finish of the event and concluded the ceremony with these words: “We are here now to co-create reality while remembering that love and compassion dissipate fear and anger. May all sentient beings express peace and gratitude while living just and sustainable lives in stewardship of this garden.”
After the formalities, there was time to socialize with water, lemonade and, in classic Fourth of July style, cold watermelon
