Business Meeting – Marshall Beaty

Following a brief business meeting, Marshall Beaty, who was born and raised in Patagonia, entertained the crowd with readings from his first book.  The memoir “The Grant – El Grante”, is a compilation of short stories growing up in a small country town between 1944 and 1964

The audience, some of whom might have participated in his escapades, enjoyed hearing  an assortment of childhood memories like these:

Third Grade: “My teacher was Ms. Reynolds, the mother of New York Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds.  She was an excellent teacher who believed in her students learning how to dance – my first experience dancing with a girl. I liked her even though she once pinched my arm for misbehaving.”

The Country Doctor : (Note: Known as Doc Mock, Delbert Mock served  the Patagonia area from 1946 – 1983).

“He made house calls day and night caring for humans and animals alike. I remember when it was time for an injection, he would only show his hand around the corner of the reception room door and wiggle his finger to beckon you to enter the examination room. It was intimidating for me as a kid but hilarious thinking back on it.”

Clarence “Chapo” Beaty: (Note: Marshall’s father (1874 – 1964) was one of the original Arizona Rangers serving from 1902 to 1907.)

“Thanks to Anne Stradling, owner of the Museum of the Horse,  eighty years after he served, my father’s saddle, tack, and guns were enshrined in the Arizona Rangers collection at the Arizona Hall of Fame Museum in Phoenix. They can be found in a glass case next to an exhibit containing Wyatt Earp’s gun.”
